San Luis Obispo is a beautiful town on the California coast. It’s warm with lots of sunshine and the cooling ocean breezes keep the heat from being too much to bear. Winegrapes like the weather as much as we do – they ripen, but stay fresh. At the Cerro Romauldo vineyard the Marmesa Syrah shows how this combination of sun and cool breezes make for complex aromas of smoke, pepper and dark fruit. It is also full-bodied with a beautiful mouthfeel and a long finish, with moderate tannins.
Merlot’s name comes from a regionsl French dialect and means “young blackbird.” This usage may have become popular because the grape’s skin is the same color as the bird’s feathers, or perhaps because the blackbirds like to eat the grapes. Given the luscious qualites and smooth drinkability of Merlot wines, the latter certainly makes more sense. The Pilo & Paska, for example, shows notes of blackberry and black plum, rounded out by hints smoke and spice. It’s full-bodied and smooth, with firm tannins and a dry finish.
